read moreThe driving test starts with an eyesight check which requires you to read a car number plate from a certain distance. If you fail this your test will not continue. Next you will be asked two vehicle safety check questions, one "show me", and one "tell me". Any incorrect answers will be recorded as a driving fault. The test will last about 40 minutes and in that time you will have to perform two reverse manoeuvres to the required standard, plus possibly the emergency stop procedure. The examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving and competency.

You must be able to read an old-style number plate in good daylight from a distance of 20.5 metres (67 feet), or a new-style number plate from 20 metres (66 feet). If you need glasses or contact lenses, they must be worn at all times during driving, including all lessons and your driving test. For your first driving lesson, you will need to provide both parts of your provisional licence and wear any glasses or contact lenses required.

Without these, you will not be allowed to take your test and will lose your fee. The theory test is made up of two parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception. You need to complete both parts to pass the theory test and you cannot apply for your practical test until you have passed the theory. Before the test starts you will be given instructions on how the test works.
